New Ferrari F70 V12 Hybrid Hypercar Through the Eyes of David Williams

No thanks to the extensive efforts of Ferrari's engineers to keep all prototypes of the Enzo's replacement (codenamed F70) safe from prying eyes, there's a lot of speculation about what Maranello's next top model will look like. Independent artist David Williams from Sydney, Australia, whom we first heard about this past June through his Ferrari 365 Turin design concept, took a good look at Ferrari's test cars and put his imagination to work to create his own vision of the F70.
Before we let you check out Williams' well-executed renderings in the gallery below, we'll remind you that the new F70 is slated to debut before the end of the year and go on sale in 2013.
The rear wheel-drive flagship from Maranello will sport a hybrid powerplant linking a mid-mounted 7.3-liter V12 naturally aspirated V12 rated at around 800-horses to a dual-clutch transmission and a pair of electric motors with about 120hp for a total system output in excess of 900 ponies.
Thanks to David Williams and Bruno R. for the shout out!

AutoNation CEO Says Tesla’s Model S is The Best Electric Car He’s Driven, Superior to Fisker Karma

AutoNation CEO Says Tesla’s Model S is The Best Electric Car He’s Driven, Superior to Fisker Karma

Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk says he wants to shift 5,000 examples of the new Model S electric saloon this year and four times that in 2013. It's a very ambitious target so, naturally, any endorsement is more than welcome; especially if it comes from the nation’s largest auto retailer. Labeling it, “a first-rate car” and “the best electric car I've ever driven", does the job nicely, thank you. That’s exactly what AutoNation Inc. CEO Mike Jackson said after driving the car during his visit to a showroom near Tesla’s HQ on August 15, according to a Bloomberg News report.
“The Model S has very good design, fit and finish is good, driving dynamics are good”, said Jackson. He did point out, though, that as with all EVs, price will be the limiting factor in the sales front.
“Electric vehicles, all-in, when we’re sitting here three years from now, are still less than 1 percent of the market. They’re very expensive,” he added.
The base model, which starts at US$57,400, has a 160-mile (257 km) range, while the price skyrockets to US$105,400 for the “Signature” variant that can do 300 miles (480 km) on a single charge. Any way you slice it, even throwing in the US$7,500 federal tax rebate that brings the base price just below the $50k mark, that’s a lot of cash.
Musk must be smiling smugly, though, as Jackson added that the Model S is better than the Fisker Karma: “Some people love the styling, some people think it’s a bit baroque, but the dynamics are not as good (as the Model S)”, said Jackson who also drove the Karma last week.
Fisker, which has to deal with a new recall due to a fire hazard as well as to unfreeze the Energy Department loan allocated to building its new Delaware factory, probably won't be cheering.
You can also watch a video from Inside Line testing the Tesla Model S right after the jump.

Trident to Show New 6.6-liter V8 Diesel-Powered Iceni Grand Tourer at the 2012 Salon Privé

Trident to Show New 6.6-liter V8 Diesel-Powered Iceni Grand Tourer at the 2012 Salon Privé

Norwich-based firm Trident Performance Vehicles isn't your usual car manufacturer and its new Iceni Grand Tourer is far from being a normal sports car, not only because of its strange looks but mostly due to the company's decision to pack a 6.6-litre turbo-diesel under its hood. The Iceni Grand Tourer is a newer development of the regular Iceni and it will make its debut at the UK's Salon PrivĂ© 2012, which is held at West London’s Syon Park from September 5 to 7.
This open-top model sports a mid-front mounted 6.6-litre V8 turbo-diesel sourced from one of GM's commercial trucks.
The eight-cylinder unit is capable of running on mineral diesel, bio diesel, palm oil and linseed oil, with Trident claiming that it generates an output of 430bhp and a staggering 950 lb-ft (1,287Nm) of peak torque at under 3,250rpm. And if that's not enough power, Trident also offers an upgrade package that lifts output to 660bhp and maximum torque to 1,050 lb-ft (1,422Nm)!
The British automaker quotes a zero to 60mph sprint time of just 3.7 seconds and a top speed nearing 200mph (320km/h).
As impressive as these performance numbers may be, the Iceni Grand Tourer really shines when it comes to fuel efficiency, as according to Trident, "at a constant 70mph (113km/h) the specially tuned engine runs at just 980rpm, produces 700lbs ft of torque, is capable of 68.9mpg UK (57.4 mpg US or 4.1lt/100km) and will keep going for over 2000miles (3,218km) on one full tank of diesel".
Trident Sports Cars managing director, Phillip Bevan, commented on the forthcoming presentation of the car at the London car show:
“We are very pleased to be at Salon PrivĂ© which this year is a great celebration of all things British and home grown talent - something we feel very strongly about at Trident. It is also a place where sports cars and super cars of this calibre are sold, and we look forward to taking new orders for the Iceni at Syon Park this September.”
The Iceni Grand Tourer is built to order in Norfolk with prices in the UK starting from £75,000, equal to €94,900 and US$118,700 at the current exchange rates.

Well, Color Me Blue and Call Me Special: Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse SE

If there's an auto show with an affluent crowd, you can rest assure that Bugatti will pop up with a special edition version of one of its cars. And by 'special edition', Bugatti usually means a different color combination, which is the case for its newest creation based on the open-top Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse that made it to this week's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey.
The one-of-a-kind Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse sports a unique Bianco and New Light Blue color scheme inspired by the fabled Type 37A that was built in 1928 and won a multitude of Grand Prix races in its time before it was acquired by Jay Leno.
The upper body of the car including the roof area and air scoops are finished in “Bianco”, while the lower panels (side skirts, front spoiler, radiator grille frame and rear apron with diffusor), the inner surfaces of the wheel rims and the underside of the automatically extending rear spoiler are colored in “New Light Blue.”
The interior of the special edition Bugatti is largely covered in Cognac leather with some hints of New Light Blue.
Power for the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse comes from a 7.9-liter W16 force-fed engine capable of delivering 1,184hp (1,200PS) and 1,500 Nm (1,106 lb-ft) of peak torque allowing the car to reach 100km/h (62mph) in 2.6 seconds and a top speed of 410 km/h (255 mph).
This particular Vitesse on show in California costs €1.74 million or about US$2.15 million at the current exchange rates.

Fisker Looking to Raise $150 Million To Fund Upcoming Atlantic Model

Amidst all the not-so-great situations currently surrounding Fisker and which range from battery related car fires to the ushering in of a new CEO, another bombshell has just hit home for the California based company. They need $150 million (€121 million), and they need it soon.

Since their inception in 2007, the Fisker brand has raised over $1 billion (€809 million) in private finances to back the Karma project, but now they need an extra cash flow in order to finalize production of their newest Atlantic model in the very near future.

Having been denied a $529 million (€428 million) government loan in the past, Fisker was unable to fund the newly opened Delaware plant where the Atlantic was slated for future production.

The company was then forced to tenuously squeeze-out $400 million in funding from private investors, now, the daunting task of an extra $150 million could prove even more difficult.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Ray Lane, a Fisker managing partner at venture firm Kleiner Perkins Cuafield and Byers, had little details as to how they were going about finding all these extra funds.

“We need money on our balance sheet, and we need money to fund the development of the next car. We’re raising some of that money now, and some later.”

While Fisker has yet to officially release a production date on the Atlantic, rumors say that the project has been pushed back to mid-2014 as the 2015 model year.
